Whether you’re preparing for a party or simply cleaning up after a night filled with trick-or-treaters, below are some spooky germ hot spots in your home that you may not think about when it comes to cleaning.
As a bonus, we’ll share tips on how to get candy and other stains out of carpets and other surfaces. With these cleaning tips, you will be able to return your space to normal after your Halloween festivities.
Start your cleaning early so you can enjoy your Halloween, or work with professional NYC cleaners to help you prioritize your time – we promise, it’s not a trick!
Prep Your Entryway
You’ll be seeing a lot of trick-or-treaters throughout the day in your NYC apartment, so you’ll want to take steps to prep your entryway for a lot of foot traffic.
- Wipe down your door handles. These high-touch areas will see a lot of dirty hands. Clean them with wipes or disinfectant cleaners throughout the day to help kill some of the germs on the spot. Wash your hands regularly and consider using masks if you’re concerned about germs. Be sure to sanitize both handles at the end of the night to start fresh the next day.
- Straighten the area. Sweep the floors and remove any clutter to make it easy to open your door. You don’t want your home to look messy as you interact with your neighbors. Additionally, the constant opening and shutting of your door may introduce more dirt than normal, so be prepared for additional cleaning. You can make it more manageable by sweeping several times throughout the day between trick-or-treaters.
- Disinfect your candy bowls. Consider wiping down the inside and outside of your candy bowl every time you refill it. That way, you can prevent germs from spreading as you handle it throughout the night. Do not eat candy from the bowl without washing your hands first. You will be able to avoid unintentionally ingesting germs.
If you’re having a party at your home, you’ll also want to take care to decorate to set the mood, but not go overboard with glitter, spiderwebs, confetti, and other materials that can be hard to clean up. It may look cool in the moment, but you’ll regret it in the long run.
Kitchen
One of the most time-honored traditions for Halloween is carving pumpkins. It’s a fun, family-friendly activity; however, it can also be extremely messy, especially with little kids.
Before you get started, wipe down your counters, table, or whatever surface you plan to use. Then, lay down newspapers, table cloths, or other materials to protect your surface. Disposable items can make cleanup even easier, as you can simply throw them out after using them, but they are less sustainable.
Grab a bowl or garbage bag to help store the goop from the inside of the pumpkin, and keep an eye out for rogue pumpkin guts throughout your space. Enthusiastic pumpkin carvers may sling the pumpkin innards around the kitchen, and these can be challenging to clean up after they dry. Additionally, they may even start to smell over time, so be thorough as you clean.
Once you’re done, be sure to wipe down the counters, even if you have paper lining the surface, to remove any remaining stickiness.
After Halloween, you can discard the pumpkins in a bag to dispose of in the trash. Know that you may have some rotten pieces that stick to the surface. Scrape off any stuck-on pumpkin bits gently with a dull knife, and use a mixture of dish soap and water to remove any stubborn stains. If there is a rotting smell present, add vinegar to the mixture to help get rid of it.

Party Surfaces
If you’re hosting a party, in addition to cleaning your entryway and kitchen, you’ll also want to make sure that you prepare other areas of your home for a party.
- Bathroom: Your guests will likely need to use the restroom at some point, so make sure you clean the toilet, toilet seat, counter, sink, door handles, water handles, and more. Sweep and mop the floor, and make sure the bathroom is stocked with hand towels, soap, and extra toilet paper. Bathrooms are often some of the dirtiest areas in your home, and the additional traffic will make it worse.
- Living Room: Sweep the floors, dust any furniture and side tables, and wash your windows. Make sure there are places for your friends and family to sit, and provide trash cans to help them clean up after themselves throughout the night. This will reduce your post-party clean-up.
- Bedrooms: Tidy up your bedrooms, including changing out the sheets if you plan on having guests. While your bedrooms may not be the focus point of the party, people may spend time in them depending on how large your NYC apartment is.
Disguise candles or air fresheners with Halloween decor as you look to make your home smell nice during your party.
The most challenging part of hosting a Halloween party is the cleanup afterward. Make sure that you have places to store any decorations and don’t add unwanted clutter to your home.
Bonus: How to Clean Candy from Carpets
One of the most common cleaning challenges during the Halloween season is cleaning up candy from carpets. Whether it’s sticky gum or melted chocolate, it can be a headache to clean up, leaving many wondering if it’s worth it.
Thankfully, it’s easier than it looks to clean up. You simply have to be patient, and here are some steps you can take.
- Scrape off any excess. This can be tricky to accomplish without spreading the candy around, but do your best to remove any pieces that can be easily removed. Use a dull butter knife, spatula, or even a paint scraper to help. The less you need to treat, the better.
- Add ice when possible. Freezing the candy can help make it easier to remove. The gum or candy becomes harder, allowing you to remove it without dealing with a stringy or melted consistency.
- Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle and shake to mix. Spray the solution on the stain you’d like to remove. You may need to let it sit for a few minutes to help the solution work.
- Blot it with clean water. The worst thing you can do is rub too hard when trying to remove a stain. It will actually do the opposite, further embedding it into the carpet. Instead, press a cloth gently to remove the cleaning surface. Grab the scraper if you need to remove additional stuck-on elements.
- Use rubbing alcohol if necessary. Some candy may be stubborn, so grab a microfiber cloth and add some rubbing alcohol. It will break down the candy’s consistency and make it easier to clean. You can also use a lemon juice and water mixture to help remove candy stains from carpet. Test on a small area prior to using it to make sure the cleaning solutions don’t damage your carpet.
- Dry the area. Once the candy stain has been removed, dry it with a clean cloth. This will help you see if you’ve missed any candy stains.
The sooner you can clean any melted or stubborn candy stains, the better. This will stop them from settling into the carpet and potentially permanently staining the area. Do not treat the area with heat. This can make the stains harder to get out.
If you’re unable to remove the stain, you may need to use a carpet cleaning solution. Professional cleaners can also help with carpet cleaning and can bring specialty carpet cleaning products, which can be used to get out more stubborn stains.
